Set on a high knoll overlooking acres of coconut groves which gently slope down to two beautiful beaches, the 15 acre resort is carefully landscaped to preserve the natural environment.
The Ayurveda centre has the benefit of the twenty years experience of its sister resort (Barberyn Reed) in providing effective and caring Ayurveda therapies to improve the health and well-being of the guests who visit the resort not only to improve their health but also to enjoy a tropical beach holiday. All the guests quickly learn to listen to their bodies - and they feel the tension and stress dissolve with the warm oil and the rhythmic strokes of the therapists. As well as for general well-bing Ayurveda has effective remedies for medical problems such as shoulder pain, back ache - sciatica, insomnia, Gastritis ulcers, skin disorders, psoriasis, allergies, and arthritis.
The Barberyn Reef Ayurveda Health Centre has a team of specially trained staff members, including resident Ayurveda doctors, therapists, medicine makers and acupuncture specialists. At the highest point on the land is an open entrance pavilion looking over the grounds towards the sea. The pavilion is a place for guests to gather and listen to music, particularly as evening gives way to the night, and stars light the huge skies.
Ochre coloured guest rooms are designed to blend harmoniously to the natural surroundings, with clusters of rooms erected on stilts in the lush valley, sloping down to the sea. All the rooms have balconies The spacious rooms are furnished to a high level of comfort using natural material. Rooms are bright and airy with high ceilings and ceiling fans, mosquito nets and en suite toilets. The majority of the rooms have four poster beds.
All resort buildings, resturants and guest rooms are built against the hillside facing the Indian Ocean with panoramic views of the garden and the sea.
The dining room which is open on two sides enjoys a prime location on the fourth floor of the main building, with spectacular views of the gardens and ocean on one side and the distant hills on the other.
Food is an integral part of Ayurveda and guests use their time at Barberyn to get to know the links between food and health. The doctors are on hand to explain what type of vegetables and fruits each guest should have or avoid.
Begin the day with tropical fresh fruit and fruit juices, herbal and Sri Lankan black tea, Yoghurt, eastern and western bread, as well as traditional Eastern breads and yams and the nourishing conjee with different leaves - "the green soup" which also aids digestion.
The highlight of the lunch buffet is the range of vegetables - cooked in different ways, and fresh fish, followed by fruits, curd (like yogurt) and treacle, and desert for those who are not watching their weight.
Dinner is a set meal with a soup, or entrée, main meal and desert. Guests can select to have the vegetarian main course or the fish option.
Saturday evening is a "Sri Lanka night" with wonderful Sri Lanka food - some of it cooked at the Buffett table, and eastern music played by a group of traditional musicians. | | Additional Information | Yoga, meditation, short excursions and cultural activities such as traditional music, and dance are offered to guests free of charge througout their stay as well as other activities such as ayurvedic cooking classes, astrology lectures and casting of horoscopes, lectures on Buddhist philosophy.
The yoga practiced at Barberyn is the traditional Hatha Yoga (postures) with Pranayama (breathing). This form of Yoga helps to elongate the spine and if one can keep the spine supple, then it can delay the aging process. "You are as old as your spine". |
