For over two decades the Barberyn Ayurvedic Health Centre has been improving the health and well-being of the guests who visit the resort not only to improve their health but also to enjoy a tropical beach holiday. All the guests quickly learn to listen to their bodies - and they feel the tension and stress dissolve with the warm oil and the rhythmic strokes of the therapists. As well as for general well-bing Ayurveda has effective remedies for medical problems such as shoulder pain, back ache - sciatica, insomnia, Gastritis ulcers, skin disorders, psoriasis, allergies, and arthritis.
The Barberyn Reef Ayurveda Health Centre has a team of specially trained staff members, including resident Ayurveda doctors, therapists, medicine makers and acupuncture specialists. All treatment programmes begin with a consultation with the Ayurvedic doctor who records not only the obvious symptoms, but will also take all aspects of a persons' life into consideration, such as their personality, their lifestyle, personal circumstances and state of health. | | Accommodation and Other Facilties | The resort is set on a long stretch of peaceful, unspoilt beach near the coastal town of Beruwala, 58km south of Colombo. The beach is protected by a large reef, which provides a natural tidal lagoon for swimming.
The resort has undergone an extensive renovation and refurbishment retaining the warm and friendly ambience that guests have come to love. The accommodation at Barberyn Reef consists of 75 rooms, the majority of which has been recently renovated / refurbished.
The previous Garden and Beach "cottages" are now clusters of rooms in several blocks - some on stilts and some on two levels (ground floor rooms and first floor rooms). All rooms are beautifully furnished with furniture made at the resort and have mosquito nets, en-suite facilities (with shower or bath) natural ventilation and electric fans, a terrace or balcony. Only a few rooms are air conditioned as most guests prefer natural ventilation which is recommended in Ayurveda.
The large and airy dining room where guests dine at "their table" each day is full of laughter and chatter during meal times. It is a place where friendships are quickly formed and single guests have the choice of joining up with others or maintaining their solitude.
The dining room spills out onto the terrance for outdoor dining. A wide range of food is served at the breakfast and lunch buffet and dinner is mainly served according to the prescribed requirement of each guest. The kitchen and dining room work closely and the dietary requirements of each guest is noted by the kitchen and an individual card with directions are placed on each table. An Ayurveda physician or a dietician is also on hand at meal times to advise guests which specific vegetable, herbs and spices to select and which to avoid according to their prescribed treatment.
There is also an a la carte beach restaurant which specialises in seafood and serves tea and beverages. It is a magical place to enjoy the aroma of fresh Sri Lankan tea, or enjoy a relaxing drink as the sun goes down over the far horizon. | | Additional Information | Yoga, meditation, short excursions and cultural activities such as traditional music, and dance are offered to guests free of charge througout their stay as well as other activities such as ayurvedic cooking classes, astrology lectures and casting of horoscopes, lectures on Buddhist philosophy.
The yoga practiced at Barberyn is the traditional Hatha Yoga (postures) with Pranayama (breathing). This form of Yoga helps to elongate the spine and if one can keep the spine supple, then it can delay the aging process. "You are as old as your spine". |
